About the films
Summer Nights (2022) by Virgile Ratelle
As the night falls on the suburbs of Montréal, the screeching sound of scooters pierce the silence. Hélly and Natthan roams through the streets looking for the best skate spots, dreaming of the best tricks.
EXIST – Palestinian life. Palestinian skateboarding by Markus Bengtsson
EXIST follows Palestinian skateboarder Aram Sabbah in the weeks leading up to the Olympic qualifications in Dubai, capturing his personal battle in leaving his homeland during the war to pursue his passion for skateboarding and carry the mantle for Palestine.
Aram never intended to qualify for the Olympics. His objective was not to compete but to send a message —a message of resilience, of resistance, and of hope. The war may try to silence and even erase Palestine. Aram wants to use his skateboard to show the world that Palestinians have a place in this world. That they exist beyond media headlines and nameless statistics.
Raising dust (2024)
In 2022, Nikita Ko, having returned to his second homeland: Montenegro, was cut off from the skate community due to the ongoing war. There were no local skaters, no skateparks, and the street spots left much to be desired. In that time of crisis, he retreated to nature. While exploring the beauty of the Balkan Peninsula, Nikita realized how a skateable environment surrounded him. With the support of his dear friends from the LYC collective in Ljubljana, Nikita was able to document this new, unconventional approach to skateboarding.
About IFFR Filmclub
Filmclub is a new initiative of IFFR, currently in the pilot phase, where (future) film lovers, young filmmakers and creatives come together to watch films and exchange interests. The idea is that the Filmclub will take place biweekly at various locations throughout Rotterdam, where a mix of (inter)national films, both new and true classics, will be shown in a relaxed setting in combination with discussions, workshops or parties. Whether you are discovering cinema for the first time or are already well on your way as a filmmaker, the Filmclub is a place to get inspired, network or just come and watch a film. The club works together with local communities throughout Rotterdam.
About Skatelanes
Skatelanes is a pursuit for a place for skateboarding culture in the city, bringing the whole scene together for a few days and claiming the streets of Rotterdam. While skateboarding is at the core, the event highlights its deep connection to other creative fields that shape its culture. Apart from organising skate, film, & create sessions throughout the year, the official Skatelanes event on August 22-23 at Roodkapje brings skate movie projections, skateboarding-themed exhibitions, bands and live acts, miniramp party, and a street spot tour competition.
