IFFR Filmclub x Dokhuis

With the summer holidays just around the corner, join us for the summer-themed upcoming edition of the IFFR Filmclub at Dokhuis on Friday 4 July. We’ll be screening three short Dutch-language films, each exploring a different perspective on young people’s experiences during the summer holidays.

Zomer zonder jou (Milou Gevers, 2023, Belgium)

In this short documentary, we meet ten-year-old Julie as she goes camping. She struggles with the fact that, for the first time since her parents’ divorce, her father won’t be joining her. But she’s not the only one camping with just one parent, and her new friends help her embrace this new situation.

Marc Jacobs (Sam de Jong, 2013, Netherlands)

Nine-year-old Soufyane’s parents are divorced, and he lives with his Dutch mother. When his Moroccan father — whom he barely knows — invites him to travel to Morocco, Soufyane is over the moon. To prepare for his trip to the land of his ancestors, Soufyane wants to buy a pair of sunglasses. While his friends encourage him to go for Ray-Bans, Soufyane has his heart set on a pair of Marc Jacobs shades and sets off to buy them on the local black market.

Dear Summer (Ahmed Hammadi, 2024, Netherlands)

Dear Summer marks broadcaster ZWART’s first film made by young people. In this short film, a group of youngsters navigate life in a disadvantaged neighbourhood. They often feel excluded from society. The series immerses us in their world, exploring themes such as friendship, social inequality and love. As the summer days slowly draw to a close, they are each faced with choices that could change their lives forever.

  • About the IFFR Filmclub

Filmclub is a new initiative of IFFR, currently in the pilot phase, where (future) film lovers, young filmmakers and creatives come together to watch films and exchange interests. The idea is that the Filmclub will take place biweekly at various locations throughout Rotterdam, where a mix of (inter)national films, both new and true classics, will be shown in a relaxed setting in combination with discussions, workshops or parties. Whether you are discovering cinema for the first time or are already well on your way as a filmmaker, the Filmclub is a place to get inspired, network or just come and watch a film. The club works together with local communities throughout Rotterdam.

  • About Film at Dokhuis

Dokhuis offers a unique space where people can come together to watch and create films. They believe cinema possesses the transformative power to help us explore not only the world around us but also the depths of our own selves. It serves as a dynamic medium for fostering meaningful dialogue and connection.

Starting in 2025, Dokhuis will host a monthly film evening on the first Friday of every month, as part of the IFFR Filmclub.

All three films are spoken in their original language (Dutch) and presented with English subtitles.

Tickets are free (reservation is required)
