IFFR Filmclub x Bibliotheek Rotterdam x Theater Zuidplein

On Saturday 13 September, IFFR and Library Rotterdam will screen the short film The Battle of Empty Stomachs معركة الأمعاء الخاوية at Theater Zuidplein. After the film, audiences will have a chance to go conversation with filmmaker Diana Al-Halabi about her creative process. This is a free event. Bring a neighbour or a friend!

About The Battle of Empty Stomachs معركة الأمعاء الخاوية

Based on research and interviews with both Palestinian hunger strikers and asylum seekers, this absurdist yet realist film stages a dialogue between the director in her mother tongue that centres on a single question: what do we know about hunger?

This film is a poetic and musical tribute to those who suffered the aftermath of famine and migration, and to Palestinian hunger strikers whose resistance outlives the deafening silence of the colonial world. Filmmaker Diana Al-Halabi won the RTM Pitch Prize at IFFR 2023, which allowed her to realise this film.

The screening of The Battle of Empty Stomachs معركة الأمعاء الخاوية is accompanied by an activity in which participants will learn about Halabi’s filmmaking process and are given tools to start thinking about creating narratives. What kinds of decision making go into making a film, and what is the motivation behind these creative decisions?
