IFFR Filmclub x Alien Mag x Galerie Noir Noir

Two IFFR shorts exploring colonialism, diaspora and belonging spark an evening of collective conversation led by Alien Mag at Galerie NOIR NOIR.

Alien Mag – an online magazine championing Dutch female creatives of colour since 2018 – leads an edition of the IFFR Filmclub where snacks, reflection, and conversation cards might just make you want to delete your Letterboxd account.

They’ll guide conversations on two IFFR shorts from past editions – Elephant and the Room by Syrian filmmaker Anas Qadamani, and The Last Harvest by Cape Verdean filmmaker Nuno Boaventura Miranda – using specially designed cards on symbolism, narrative and themes. Small groups will share perspectives, debate and collectively score each film from 1 to 10.The evening takes place at Galerie NOIR NOIR, a new Rotterdam-Oost platform rooted in African and Afro-Caribbean diaspora stories, welcoming both film lovers and those who don’t usually visit IFFR. You’ll go home with new friends and fresh perspectives.

About the films

The Last Harvest (Nuno Boaventura Miranda, 2025)
Young Gabriel worries about forgetting his late father’s face; Isabel, a single mother, frets about her son and how she will make ends meet; Firmino questions his sense of belonging after losing his garden which he considered his portal to Cape Verde. The lives of Gabriel, Isabel and Firmino intertwine in Nuno Boaventura Miranda’s The Last Harvest. Miranda offers an intergenerational portrait of a Cape Verdean community and diaspora living in Lisbon as they grapple with questions of identity and a shared longing for connection.

The Elephant & the Room (Anas Qadamani, 2024)
Anas Qadamani uses a variety of appropriated images belonging to different sources, in order to weave a furious critique of colonialism and its political double standards. Taking as a point of departure the case of African elephants brought to Europe, this essay-film leads us to a more general reflection about the present-day crises that devastate our world and rob it of humanity.

Tickets are free (reservation is required)
