Matters in Common
Join us at sunset on 25 September at the Grondstoffenstation community hub for the new open-air cinema event Matters in Common featuring an ensemble of short films curated by María José Crespo in collaboration with IFFR Filmclub.
Through aluminium, stone, water and seeds, the selected short films explore matter as carrier of stories about labour, extraction, ecological transformation and collective care. They connect bodies to landscapes, histories to other futures, and small gestures to shared forms of knowledge. Together they make us think over other ways of relating to the world around us: ways grounded in cooperation, attention and care.
Featuring local and international filmmakers who have previously presented their films during IFFR, the lineup includes Merging Bodies by Adrian Paci, Know Your Stones by Katarina Jazbec, Ninfa fluida by Ugo Petronin and Seeds by Colectivo Los Ingrávidos. Seeds will be immersed in a live sonic score by Mexican sound artist Concepcion Huerta, with a site-specific screen to host the films developed by neighbourhood architect Tomi Hilsee.
Drinks and snacks from Waste Simmers and Wijkkeuken op Zuid will fill our bellies along the way.
This event is free to attend.
We will begin the screenings once the sunlight dips (approx 20.00). Films will be presented with English subtitles. Should weather conditions become unfavourable to host the event outside at our Grondstoffenstation we will relocate to Gemaal op Zuid located close by, with announcements to be made on the day.

Matters in Common is part of Waste Simmers, a series of collaborations and events organised by artist, gardener and avid composter Kate Price at the Afrikaanderwijk Cooperatie’s Grondstoffenstation to explore possibilities of their collected ‘wastes’. The event is part of the IFFR Filmclub.

About the IFFR Filmclub
Filmclub is a new initiative of IFFR, currently in the pilot phase, where (future) film lovers, young filmmakers and creatives come together to watch films and exchange interests. The idea is that the Filmclub will take place biweekly at various locations throughout Rotterdam, where a mix of (inter)national films, both new and true classics, will be shown in a relaxed setting in combination with discussions, workshops or parties. Whether you are discovering cinema for the first time or are already well on your way as a filmmaker, the Filmclub is a place to get inspired, network or just come and watch a film. The club works together with local communities throughout Rotterdam.
