Films op Zuid – The Disaster Cannot Be Contained
IFFR and Library Rotterdam will screen the short film The Disaster Cannot Be Contained كان يمكن أن لا أكون together with filmmaker Diana Al-Halabi on Saturday 18 January 2025 at 14.00. This is a free event. Bring a neighbour or a friend and experience the beauty of Rotterdam, also on the cinema screen!

About The Disaster Cannot Be Contained كان يمكن أن لا أكون
Disaster struck Beirut in 2020: the city was damaged by the biggest non-nuclear explosion in history, resulting in hundreds of victims. Filmmaker Diana Al-Halabi has a love of ports and has worked in the port of Beirut in the past. She draws a poetic parallel between the harbour of Rotterdam, where she was when she heard about the explosion, and that of Beirut. The blast hit Beirut at its core, but the stories reach much further.
The screening of The Disaster Cannot Be Contained كان يمكن أن لا أكون is accompanied by an activity in which participants will learn about Halabi’s filmmaking process and are given tools to start thinking about creating narratives. What kinds of decision making go into making a film, and what is the motivation behind these creative decisions?
The workshop will be given in English. The film is in Arabic and English with English subtitles. There’s a limited capacity, so please reserve your seats before through the link below.
