IFFR Filmclub x Skateland

Dive into Rotterdam’s vibrant skate culture with a bowl jam and two IFFR skate films on Saturday 30 November at Skateland with the second edition of the IFFR Filmclub!

A skateboarder jumping over a projection of the tiger.

Grab your skateboard, prepare your best tricks, or simply come to be inspired by two moving films by Claude Jutra and April Jones which depict the thrills and freedom of skating as well as the fragility and scarcity of spaces available for the skate community.

The evening will be hosted by local skater Baba and is presented in collaboration with Skatestore. The Bowl Jam is powered by El Tony Mate and Skatestore.

Film programme

The Devil’s Toy, Claude Jutra, 1969, Canada

This short depicts the dawn of skateboarding in Montreal, capturing the exuberance of boys and girls having the time of their lives in free-wheeling downhill locomotion. A new activity frowned upon by police and adults, skateboarding gave youngsters a thrilling sensation of speed and freedom.

Concrete Law, April Jones, 2024, USA

When the Channel Street Skatepark is threatened with demolition for the construction of a new overpass, skateboarders turn their frustration with the lack of government support into political action.

About Skateland

Skateland Rotterdam has been located at Piekstraat 45 for over 25 years, where you used to find the Nestlé coffee factory. With 4200 m² of surface area and around 25,000 visits per year, Skateland Rotterdam is one of the largest skate parks in the Netherlands.

About the IFFR Filmclub

Filmclub is a new initiative of IFFR, currently in the pilot phase, where (future) film lovers, young filmmakers and creatives come together to watch films and exchange interests. The idea is that the Filmclub will take place biweekly at various locations throughout Rotterdam, where a mix of (inter)national films, both new and true classics, will be shown in a relaxed setting in combination with discussions, workshops or parties. Whether you are discovering cinema for the first time or are already well on your way as a filmmaker, the Filmclub is a place to get inspired, network or just come and watch a film. The club works together with local communities throughout Rotterdam.

Tickets are free but reservation is required.
