Arminius x IFFR: 9 Songs
Music and film bring people together, a mission close to the hearts of IFFR and Debatpodium Arminius. From May to October, join us in the beautiful surroundings of Arminius to watch, discuss and explore the powerful synergies between music and film.

Our series offers a journey into new sonic worlds: from the unsung female pioneers of electronic music, a bitter-sweet biopic on enigmatic Texan singer Blaze Foley, and the early-2000s London alt-rock scene. Discover unexpected sounds and trailblazing musicians, played loud and on the big screen.
About 9 Songs (2004) dir. Michael Winterbottom
British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom’s (Wonderland, 24 Hour Party People, The Trip) full-frontal foray into sex, drugs and rock and roll earned him little more than tabloid media controversy upon the release of 9 Songs, but since then audiences have come around to the film’s charms. Matt, an English glaciologist, and Lisa, an American student, meet each other at a Black Rebel Motorcycle gig in London’s Brixton Academy. Soaring above the vast immensity of Antarctica, Matt looks back on the absorbing sexual relationship that followed, revisiting the couple’s uninhibited physical relationship and intercutting it with nine songs from live concerts. A tribute to the energy of the early-2000s alt-rock scene, the film features the likes of Elbow, Primal Scream, The Dandy Warhols, Super Furry Animals and Franz Ferdinand, making 9 Songs a playful take on nostalgia filmed in handheld digital: a throwback to a bygone era and a love that was never meant to last.
Admission: €10 or €7 for students and under-23
