Unfinished Sky

Unfinished Sky is the Australian remake of Karim Traïda’s successful Dutch film The Polish Bride. Monic Hendrickx plays the lead in both versions, this time beside William McInnes as the solitary widower Waldring. One day, this man finds a badly injured woman on his farmyard and takes her in. The taciturn and pragmatic farmer doesn’t seem very affected, but when the Afghan refugee slowly but surely starts getting involved with housekeeping, he thaws. He gradually starts to suspect the cause of her injury and discovers that, behind the respectable façade of his country, there is a world in which vulnerable people without rights are abused by apparently respectable fellow citizens. In the difficult atmosphere, but one that gradually warms, underlined by increasingly colourful camerawork, the dour farmer and the traumatised Tahmeena get closer together. Humorous episodes in which the farmer tries to teach her some English and an insight into sport lighten their difficult past. When a suspicious local cop comes to investigate, an unexpected depth is added to the thus-far cautious relationship between Waldring and Tahmeena. Waldring is willing to lie for her and, as a result, they form a bond that is not easy to break.
