Blissfully Yours

For his second feature, Weerasethakul was inspired by the desire to capture a particular uncertainty, namely the confusing feeling of not knowing whether you are happy. The elegant and mysterious film is full of humorous and creative inventions. The opening titles only appear after forty-five minutes, some images are covered by graffiti. Sometimes the film is about minor everyday things, at other moments it balances on the edge of pornography.Roong is looking forward to the day when she can curl up in the arms of her Burmese lover Min, who is staying illegally in Thailand. She pays Orn, an elderly woman, to care for Min, while she goes looking for a place to be happy. One afternoon, Min takes his girlfriend for a picnic in the jungle, to a spot where they can freely show each other their love.Weerasethakul is one of the few film makers in Thailand who works outside the strict Thai ‘studio system’. He experiments with many elements from Thai radio and television programmes, comic strips and old films and finds inspiration far from the big city. With Blissfully Yours, Weerasethakul confirms his great innovative talent and, without compromise, adds a new chapter to Thai cinema. Winner of the `Prix un certain regard’ in Cannes.
