Gabriel Mascaro

Gabriel MASCARO (1983, Brazil) is a filmmaker and visual artist from the flourishing film scene in Recife, known for portraying contemporary Brazilian realities and exploring the intersections of politics and everyday life. He began his career with documentaries such as KFZ-1348 (2008) and Avenida Brasília Formosa (2010), which premiered at IFFR’s Bright Future. Mascaro moved into fiction with August Winds (2014), which world premiered at Locarno.
His second narrative feature, Neon Bull (2015), received script-development support from the Hubert Bals Fund and confirmed his international reputation. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize in the Orizzonti section, before being selected for IFFR 2016.
Mascaro’s works have been presented at leading cultural institutions such as MoMA, the Guggenheim, MACBA, and the São Paulo Biennale. His longstanding relationship with IFFR includes multiple projects supported and showcased. His latest feature, The Blue Trail (2025), premiered in Berlinale’s Main Competition, winning the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize, was supported by the Hubert Bals Fund and was part of CineMart 2017.
