Aoyama Shinji

AOYAMA Shinji (1964–2022) was a Japanese film director, screenwriter, composer, film critic and novelist. He studied at Rikkyo University, and attended classes on cinema taught by Hasumi Shigehiko, Japan’s most important film critic in the 1980s. After graduating from Rikkyo in 1989, Aoyama started working as an assistant director on a number of films and television programmes. He made his debut as a director in 1995 with It’s Not in the Textbook!. Aoyama is widely respected as a key figure in the Japanese film revival. Aoyama won two awards at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival for his film Eureka (2000).
