Shi Yun Teo

Shi Yun TEO (1999, Singapore). Teo’s work usually takes the form of media and drawing, creating narrative and abstract works that feature historical documents, archival footage and personal recordings. Being brought up in a religious household and a young multi-racial country, where traditions from her ancestral homeland are slowly forgotten as they developed into a Western hegemony – the contrast between the digital world and traditional drawings provides a potential space to create a homeland for people traversing the complex channels of diaspora. Teo is reclaiming her heritage and culture through documentation and conversations with a hybrid language that everyone is familiar with. Her work contends with questions of identity, heritage, culture and diaspora in relation to Singapore’s rapid growth through family history and local mythology. The role of her work acts as an archivist attempting to show stories of the unknown.
