Shamira Raphaëla
Shamira RAPHAËLA (1982, Aruba) is a filmmaker based in Rotterdam. She grew up in Aruba with a Dutch mother and a Curaçaoan father. She moved to the Netherlands where she earned her Bachelor degree in Audiovisual Arts at the AKI ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design in 2006. Her debut film Deal with it (2014) earned multiple awards at various international film festivals. Her films were awarded at many festivals including the Best Children’s Documentary at IDFA 2017, the Best European Children’s Doc award at the 2019 Berlinale, and Golden Calf at NFF 2019. In addition to making films, she is a board member of the Dutch Academy For Film and launched Framing of Us, together with Tessa Boermans at IDFA 2020, aiming to decolonize the documentary industry.
