Raúl Ruiz
Raúl RUIZ (1941-2011, Chile) studied Theology and Law in Argentina. He wrote many scripts for Mexican television, taught in New York, led the Maison de la Culture du Havre and wrote over 100 plays before dedicating himself to filmmaking. He made some 100 features, many of them in France, which for a long time was his home after Pinochet’s coup in 1973. In the Netherlands he made The Roof of the Whale (1981). In 2004, IFFR screened a retrospective of his multifarious oeuvre, paying tribute to his his long cinematic career. After Ruiz’ passing, his wife Valeria Sarmiento finished his film The Wandering Soap Opera (2017). Dialogue d’exilés (1974) is part of the IFFR 2024 Focus: Chile in the Heart programme.
