While 1991’s Scary True Stories is customarily designated as the ground zero of J-horror, this found-footage-style investigation into the case of a haunted pop song already experimented with subtle ghostly appearances and atmospheric tension three years earlier. It also hints at Lovecraftian elder gods and culminates in a climactic orgy of primordial chaos that puts the film’s budgetary restraints to creative and effective use.
