A portrait of Neapolitan singer-actor superstar Nino D’Angelo by his son Toni that turns into a paean to ordinary people, their dreams and hopes, and the popular arts like music and cinema from which these yearnings for better lives and kinder loves grow.
Nino D’Angelo was born into the humblest of conditions and was out of school as early as possible to work and make money for the family. He became, during the second half of the 1970s, the brightest new star of Neapolitan popular culture, as a singer as well as an actor in theatre and cinema alike. Half a century on, D’Angelo has ascended to the realms of living national treasure, based on an artistic development that slowly managed to connect with people all over the nation.
He also became more and more socially outspoken, while remaining firmly rooted in his southern home – even if he has been living in Rome now for decades. Why? We shall learn among many other things from this beautiful documentary made by his son Toni (known otherwise mainly for his unusual crime films). In sync with D’Angelo’s music and screen persona, Nino. 18 giorni is above all a paean to ordinary people, their dreams and hopes, and the arts from which these yearnings for better lives and kinder loves grow
