A young girl is caught in a war between her separated parents, trying to make sense of it all. Bottling up the lightning intensity of childhood, Ang Geck Geck Priscilla uses her memories from 1990s Singapore to craft a heart-rending debut.
Seven is the age when you begin to understand the adult world, but you’re still treated like a child. Our naïve but sassy titular heroine has a crush on a cute boy and is a thriving chewing gum saleswoman at school. However, she instead must spend more time minding her 5-year-old sister and navigating the petty battle between her separated parents, who are self-absorbed with their dating lives and ricocheting the sisters between homes. Ah Girl tackles the irrationality of adult behaviour through the eyes of children with utmost sincerity, quietly taking seriously the joy and anguish experienced by kids.
Basing the film on memories of her own childhood, Ang Geck Geck Priscilla puts us on the same emotional plane as her young Singaporean protagonists growing up in 1994. Ah Girl’s world is brought to life by its cast of riveting young actors and doses of situational humour, the playful cinematography further capturing her quirkiness. You’ll root for confident, smug and outspoken Ah Girl until the end in this emotionally profound and singular depiction of childhood.
