Primeira pessoa do plural
First Person Plural
Mateus and Irene plan to celebrate their wedding anniversary at a tropical retreat, but are separated on the eve of their departure, and forced to question their relationship and how they relate to their troubled son, in this enigmatic third feature from Sandro Aguilar.
Mateus and Irene have been married for 20 years. They live in a luxurious apartment with their teenage son, whose chaotic, troubled lifestyle starkly contrasts with Mateus’ obsessive need for order. To celebrate their anniversary, the couple plans a getaway to a tropical island. After receiving vaccines for the trip, an unexpected night of separation leaves them wracked with shivers, fever-like symptoms, and vivid hallucinations. These altered states provoke a re-evaluation of their lives, their relationship, and the fragile structures that hold them together.
Sandro Aguilar’s Primeira pessoa do plural is a bold and enigmatic exploration of bourgeois life, marriage, and the contradictions of privilege. Dipping into surrealism, Aguilar crafts a work that is both visually striking and narratively unconventional. The film eschews linear storytelling for an elliptical, almost abstract approach, where dialogue functions more as symbolism than straightforward communication. This narrative detachment exposes the fault lines of intimate relationships, pulling viewers into the subconscious realms of its characters. With its glitzy, French 50s-inspired art direction heightening the dreamlike quality, Primeira pessoa do plural unfolds like a fevered tropical reverie. Immersive and hallucinatory, Aguilar’s third feature captures the tension and fragility of lives unraveling under the weight of their own illusions.
