An unexpected kiss unburies memories and longing for Shu-yi, a mother quietly holding her family together despite her unhappiness. As her rebelling son Han grows drawn to the enigmatic Xue-jin, Shu-yi rekindles her past connection with the same woman in this tenderly crafted exploration of family dynamics, identity and desire.
As his high school years draw to a close, teenager Han feels the weight of his family’s outwardly perfect image. His father, a respected surgeon, expects him to follow in his footsteps, while his mother, Shu-yi, silently holds the family together – though Han senses her quiet unhappiness. Rebelling against expectations, Han meets Xue-jin, an enigmatic photographer and eye doctor. But it soon becomes clear that Xue-jin has a deeper connection to the family, as Shu-yi and Xue-jin share a history that complicates their seemingly ordered lives.
In her sophomore feature, Taiwanese director Julian Chou crafts a tender and incisive melodrama, exploring identity, longing, and the fragile bonds that define family dynamics. As Shu-yi rekindles her relationship with Xue-jin, cracks emerge in her marriage, exposing the tension between societal appearances and personal truths. Against the backdrop of Taiwan – the first Asian country to legalise same-sex marriage – Blind Love delicately navigates themes of queerness, gender, and cultural expectations.
When Han’s father declares, “There are two kinds of people in the world. One is normal. The other is not,” the film subtly dismantles this reductive worldview. With remarkable sensitivity, Chou suggests that happiness lies not in conformity but in embracing the subtle differences that make us human.
