Alice Guy-Blaché was the first woman who had a substantial career in cinema as a director, producer and writer, chalking up several hundred titles between 1896 (La Fée aux choux) and 1920 (Tarnished Reputations, with co-directors Herbert Blaché and Léonce Perret).
