British cinematographer Lol Crawley is the recipient of the sixth Robby Müller Award, an annual prize, in collaboration with the Netherlands Society of Cinematographers (NSC) and Andrea Müller-Schirmer, the wife of the late Robby Müller. The award pays homage to contemporary artists working behind the lens who, in the spirit of the celebrated Dutch cinematographer, have created a striking visual language throughout their work.
Most recently known for Brady Corbet’s epic post-war drama The Brutalist (IFFR 2025), which celebrates its Dutch premiere at IFFR, Lol Crawley, BSC (1974) is an award-winning director of photography with more than 25 years of experience in film and television. His work has been nominated for and won BAFTA Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, International Festival Awards, VMAs and ASC awards. His feature film work includes White Noise (2022), The Humans (2021), The Childhood of a Leader (IFFR 2015), 45 Years (2015), Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013) and Ballast (2008). His television credits include Black Mirror (2011), The OA (2016 – 2019), The Crimson Petal and the White (2011), and Utopia (2013 – 2014). He has also shot commercials for many brands including Volvo, BMW, Mercedes, Adidas, Samsung and Dior, and his music promo work includes Bob Dylan’s Shadow Kingdom alongside promos for Arcade Fire, Nick Cave and Coldplay.
The jury for this year’s Robby Müller Award noted: “Lol Crawley’s camera is dedicated to the story and characters in a way that is both humble and ardent. It forms a close, dynamic relationship with them. His sensual cinematography embraces the environment as unpredictable and fluid and aims to align with its flow rather than confine it to a predefined frame.”
During the Talk, moderated by writer and film critic Peter Bradshaw, Crawley will discuss his cinematographic approach, his inspirations and some of the work from his extensive oeuvre.
