Scud was born in China, travelled the world and built a solid, twenty-year career in IT and business. Realising that his own dreams were unfulfilled he returned to Hong Kong, founded a production company (Artwalker) and making films became his life’s drive.
City Without Baseball(2007) co-directed by Lawrence Lau, may be Scud’s formal directorial debut, but Permanent Residence (2008), marks the first of his films that are deeply rooted in personal experience. And indeed, exploration of one’s place in the world, examination of life, death and the afterlife swirl through his body of work. His films are audacious, passionate, cruel, loving and consistently stubborn. Inhabited by beautiful men, left wandering between the realms of absolute pleasure, sensual daydreams and nightmares, often naked and vulnerable. Personal and aesthetically courageous as they are, they brought a new edge to Hong Kong queer cinema and the image of the Asian male body.
Scud’s tenth and latest feature Naked Nations – Tribe Hong Kong (2024) opened the door for a long-overdue Focus: Scud. Moderated by Dr Victor Fan, Scud will discuss his career as a filmmaker in Hong Kong, his intentions and his impact.
