If there is one actor who has shined with a special glow over the past year, it is Sandra Hüller, having starred in two of the most acclaimed 2023 films – Justine’s Triet Anatomy of a Fall and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest. Hüller was born in Suhl in 1978. She studied acting at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts (Berlin) and made her stage debut in 1996. For her first major role in cinema, Hans-Christian Schmid’s Requiem (2006), Hüller won the Silver Bear at the Berlinale. But it was Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann (2016) that catapulted her to international attention. She has won the European Film Award twice.
In her talk, Hüller will delve into her acting trajectory, discussing the highlights of her career, but also lesser-known performances – including work in the theatre and other arts. She will talk about her understanding of and approach to acting and character (with special emphasis on The Zone of Interest, playing at this year’s festival) and the different methods and needs of the directors she has collaborated with through the years. This will be a unique occasion to dive into the experiences and wisdom of one of the most talented contemporary actors working today.
