Talk: Grimm Vandekerckhove

Event

IFFR 2024

Belgian cinematographer Grimm Vandekerckhove is the recipient of the fifth Robby Müller Award, an annual prize, in collaboration with the Netherlands Society of Cinematographers (NSC) and Andrea Müller-Schirmer, the wife of the late Robby Müller. The award pays homage to contemporary artists working behind the lens, in the spirit of the celebrated Dutch cinematographer.

Grimm Vandekerckhove is a true discovery among the new generation of international cinematographers. Besides working on a variety of short films and several features, he is widely known for his close collaborations with fellow Belgian filmmaker Bas Devos on features Ghost Tropic (2019) and Here (2023). Both films are nuanced, poignant portraits of people and their environments depicted with great, understated care and tenderness by Vandekerckhove.

His signature style combines artistic finesse with a documentary-like sensitivity, characterised by an unwavering, deeply humane point of view on the world and those who inhabit it. With profound commitment and a wondrous tranquillity he captures details and hidden shades of everyday existence in his own singular way that mirrors the emotionally moving images of Robby Müller.

During the Talk moderated by the Dutch cinematographer Guido van Gennep (NSC), Vandekerckhove will discuss his cinematographic approach, his inspirations and the films he worked on.

In collaboration with the Netherlands Society of Cinematographers.
