Talk: Art Directions

Event

IFFR 2024

Five participants whose work is part of the Art Directions programme gather for a conversation about the present and future of art: American filmmaker, animator and illustrator Debra Solomon; Australian artist, sociologist and educator Luke Conroy; visual artist and audiovisual designer Anne Fehres; South African artist Phumulani Ntuli; and Ukrainian filmmaker and artist Yuri Yefanov.

Solomon’s work focuses on the struggles of womanhood and female identity. Regular collaborators, Conroy and Fehres (Unfolding) engage with social concerns and ecological issues, using an interdisciplinary approach. Ntuli (Cloud Migration and Godide) explores issues of identity, migration and the human condition through collage, performance and video installation. Yefanov (We will definitely talk about this after the last air raid alert stops) considers interactions in everyday life and politics by devising his own systems of mythology.

Moderated by art historian and curator Sanneke Huisman, this roundtable offers the chance to explore the backgrounds of these artists, their particular methods and approaches, the drives that move them to create their works, and the ways in which their artistic practices relate to an ever changing technological and political reality.
