Genre rules! – on the circulation of genre films on the festival circuit

What is the current relevance of popular and genre films at film festivals? Join us as we unravel these definitions in their various cultural and industry contexts.

The representation of popular cinemas has been one of the key concerns in recent years with IFFR’s mission to present ever more diverse moving image practices within the festival. In this representation, genre films sit decidedly side-by-side with other more traditional forms, instead of categorising them away into a single section. Thus, it’s the perfect time to reflect and discuss the state of things, as well as the future of popular cinemas, more specifically genre pictures – at film festivals and their global circulation in general.

The panel will consist of:

- Sokyou Chea, co-director of Tenement (Big Screen Competition 2024)
- Martin Koolhoven, filmmaker
- Donsaron Kovitvanitcha, director of the World Film Festival of Bangkok
- Omar Hilal, director Voy! Voy! Voy!
- Joe Yanick, distributor, producer and co-founder of Yellow Veil Pictures, this year represented by Blackout and So Unreal

Moderated by IFFR programmer, scholar and critic Stefan Borsos.

Film still: Tenement dir. Inrasothythep Neth & Sokyou Chea (Big Screen Competition 2024)
