“With images we'll declare to the world our desire for freedom. With our bodies we'll express our passion for Hong Kong for the past century.”
The Cube Phantom is unlike any Hong Kong film you've seen: a virtually wordless dance poem in ten parts, it explores the exultation and the tragedy of the city in ten different site-specific choreographed sequences. Naked except for thick chalky paint, three dancers struggle to move: are they prisoners, ghosts, corpses, souls in torment? Sequences inspired by parkour and hip hop bound through waterways of Tai O and Mid Levels' slopes. A stark battle in a vast expressionistic sewer is followed by a feral man in a cage sequence inspired by Cageman (also in this series).
Filmmaker Alan Lau, choreographer Jordann de Santis, composer Anthony Cheng and a troupe of fearless, expressive dancers have created a thrilling, visceral pop/art tribute to the power of Hong Kong's indomitable people.
