Filmed in a vérité style, Occupied Cinema chronicles the occupation of the cinema Zvezda in Belgrade, Serbia; one of the 14 cinemas that had once belonged to the state and was then sold to a dubious entrepreneur. The film smartly combines footage from the occupation with reflections on the meanings of the action, while also conveying a real sense of urgency and suspense for its outcome.
"It is commonly held that we are living in times where people have lost their trust in institutions and the state. The occupation of the cinema was an opportunity for people to come together, to self-organize and manage a contained micro economy, to essentially bypass the market logic and break away from the ideological apparatus of the state. There we had a rare gathering of artists, activists and former cinema employees standing up together against injustice. A moment later, everything collapsed." (Senka Domanović)
