Several years after the end of the Spanish Civil War, reticent Anxo returns to the Galician village where he was born. Through casual conversations during his trip, he discovers how war and the new Franco regime have transformed the relationships between people. At home, he is greeted with suspicion by both sides. Voiced in dialogues, and sometimes monologues, are stories about war, fear, captivity, riches, poverty and the importance of freedom. These reflections are based on the memoires of exiled writers, those silenced by defeat and, finally, by political prisoners.
With visually sumptuous cinematography by Mauro Herce (also of Fire Will Come), Eloy Enciso's much-lauded second feature-length film unravels the knots of fascism only to remain entangled in the web of oppression. Gradually, this hypnotic film transcends its tragic historical period to become something that is both metaphysical and presently urgent.IFFR 2020
