After surviving a bizarre attempt on her life and seeing her savings dwindle, 25-year-old Maya returns to her remote village birthplace in the hope that the family villa will yield returns. Her best girlfriend, Dini, accompanies her. The women encounter an empty villa and rather unapproachable villagers, with a mysterious wayang puppet master as their chieftain. As soon as the locals discover who Maya is, their aloofness turns to murderous desire: in their minds she is responsible for the curse on the village. Can she stay away from their sharp knives long enough to prove the curse is not her fault?
In Indonesia this home-grown horror film was a box office smash. Scriptwriter, director and genre-lover Joko Anwar creates a pleasantly dark atmosphere with spooky locations, an original score, stylistically coherent production design and ditto colouring.
