Hanging out at the skatepark, studying videos of the trick he wants to learn (frontside tailslide), a punk show now and then: taciturn teen Renzo’s life is uneventful until he meets Zoe, a girl who hangs about just as vacantly in the streets of Trujillo, Peru and loves drawing antennas.
Salomón Pérez’s En medio del laberinto is an energetic coming-of-age film set in a Peru generally unseen. The debuting director returned to his home town after studying film in Switzerland and based the script on his own teen experiences. His film is a slice of life. The disarming lead is shot as if in a documentary, in 4:3 format, which lends it something nostalgic, dreamy. While Renzo gingerly reaches out, Pérez depicts the surroundings more and more through Zoe’s eyes. The increasingly noticeable antennas open up a new world for Renzo.
