The last thing anybody in Portugal ever expected from Edgar Pêra was a box office bonanza – until Virados do avesso came along, 2014’s second-most successful local production. How did this come about? Here’s the story: when Pêra visited O barão‘s producer to discuss another project, he handed him the script for Virados do avesso, saying it wasn't the kind of movie he usually does – nevertheless, maybe he’d enjoy reading it?
But is a popular farce with some political smarts really so alien to Pêra? Isn’t a satire about a gay writer waking up straight one morning (and curious to look at the world sideways from this angle) prime Pêra material, offering all kinds of opportunities to go surreal and further out on a limb (Are my memories real? – Oh, the Dick’ian glory of it all!)? Isn’t this gem of carefully crafted camp supreme just the other side of the A janela coin – avant-garde entertainment instead of experiments in pop? YES!

An overdue tribute to one of world cinema's most unpredictable voices: Edgar Pêra, sound-image philosopher, performer, natural born rebel, eternal modernist, political satirist extraordinaire.
