Sophia Antipolis is a technology park on the French Riviera, nestled between the sea, the forest and the mountains. Sophia is also the name of a missing young woman. A group of vigilantes, members of a sect and women seeking plastic surgery wander around and look for some sort of connection.
Virgil Vernier’s films can be defined as 'psycho-geography', where people and places merge in a simultaneously dreamy, anxious, primitive and contemporary world, with flashes of
documentary piercing through the narrative. The title says it all:
wisdom ('sophia' in Greek), city, police and politics (all from the Greek root 'polis') coexist and fight each other (hence
the word 'anti') in visions of beauty and doom under a scorching sun
which may rise or set − we never know. Finally, this is a film which gives
a new twist to the idea of 'poetic justice'.
