After his Oscar-winning A Fantastic Woman (2017) and Disobedience, Sebastián Lelio made a shot-for-shot remake of his own Chilean film, Gloria (2013). After actress Paulina García, it’s now the sparkling Julianne Moore who makes an impression as the divorced Gloria Bell, an independent woman in her 50s. During the day she is busy with her own job and very recent grandchild; in the evening she heads for the dance floor in singles clubs. Until she starts an uneasy romance with a man she picked up at the bar (a vulnerable John Turturro) and the meticulous balance in her life is disturbed.
We see Gloria primarily in everyday situations, relaxing by herself, singing in the car along with Olivia Newton-John. But the love affair also brings painful moments, such as during a disastrous trip to Las Vegas. While Gloria bravely tries to stay on course, we occasionally catch a glimpse of a deeper sadness.
