“When you come back, I will have changed”, Mario promises. Armelle seems not even to be considering returning to her family life, but her husband clings on to hope. On the pretext of wanting to meet new people, he enrols in a theatre project where his wife is working as a lighting technician. He promises not to get in her way. But then, inevitably, he steps into her spotlight, talking cautiously about his feelings.
It is disarming to see how, hidden in lead actor Bouli Lanners’ stocky body, there seems to be a little abandoned dog trying, gauchely, to regain his wife’s attention. Mario has no idea how to deal with women – which is all the more difficult as he has full responsibility for two teenage daughters. Who in turn have no idea what to expect from their father. C'est ça l'amour is an affecting film about loving and letting go, rolling with the punches and discovering anew.
