Eighteen-year-old Angel leaves her stint in juvenile detention with nothing but a few bucks and a dead cellphone. After serving time for unlawful possession of a weapon, she’s cast back onto the streets and into a stormy world riddled with the demons of her past. Her little sister, Abby, is stuck in foster care while her dad, responsible for the murder of their mother, roams free. Armed with her sister and believing she has nothing to lose, Angel sets out on a emotional journey to find her father, right the wrongs, and finally calm the tide.
Director Jordana Spiro worked with Angelica Nwandu, a former foster child whose biography is strikingly similar to Angel’s, to co-write a convincing, poetic screenplay showing that hope and love exist even in the darkest of times. All of this is captured in Dominique Fishback’s sensitive portrayal of Angel, a young woman on the verge of adulthood.
Nominated for the VPRO Big Screen Award.
