What to expect when Bruno Dumont decides to make a musical about Joan of Arc’s childhood and teenage years? Well, anything. In 1425, Jeannette is not Joan of Arc yet but is waiting for her destiny. Dumont took inspiration from Charles Peguy, an early 20th-century French anti-modernist writer who dedicated lyrical and poetic texts to the Maid of Orleans. But the words clash here with an electro-heavy-metal-pop soundtrack and choreography by Philippe Decouflé.
It’s Joan of Arc for headbangers and rappers, so do not expect some La La Land smoothie as Dumont uses non-professional actors or singers as usual. It’s a deliberately punk effort which manages to touch the mystery of the future warrior and her visions in modern terms: the fragile, touching performance of main actress Lise Leplat Prudhomme as Joan and the trance-like noisy music stick the film perfectly between heaven and earth.
