The annihilation of indigenous peoples in the southern area of Patagonia happened in a previous century, but the contempt felt by white people towards the survivors is still intact (as recently confirmed in Argentina). Puyelli is a Mapuche shaman who is falsely accused of homicide and practising medicine illegally (although it all happens because he allegedly ‘abused’ a young rich man). While in prison, the silent Puyelli waits and establishes a bond with one of the leaders in the penitentiary, Ramón, who is close to being released.
Taking the event as a seed allows Campusano to delve into subjects such as the prison system, xenophobia, class confrontation and the power networks in a society that moves according to the interests of the ruling classes. The tale is set in Bariloche, which was once a haven for fugitive Nazis and has always been the emblem for tourism in the Patagonia region.
