When is a human being more than just himself or herself? Where is the boundary between the solitary and the communal? This elegant essay, shot on misty 16mm film, takes us on a journey through Europe and India in search of what love and relationships– good and bad– can be, in a broader sense. After all, "the field of possibilities is immense", as a woman in France says. Polyamory, long-distance relationships, forced marriage. What is ideal for one person, is unbearable for another. What to choose – if choice is an option?
Philosophical reflections are given colour by real people within their love, family and community contexts. Everyone is on the way to or from someone else, it seems. The footage in between by collage artist Diana Zoradana Elfadivo provides a surprising visual commentary as she cuts and tears paper bodies, using these as building blocks in her work, where she expands the possibilities of communal living even further.
