Dean Fleischer-Camp used over 100 hours of home video material, found on YouTube, shot by father Gary, who loves to share every family moment with the world. Intelligent, super-fast editing – no shot longer than fourty seconds – enabled the creation of a narrative that makes viewers increasingly aware of the seductive nature of consumer culture, the dangers of being addicted to new purchases and the possible disastrous consequences of fraudulent actions.
This controversial documentary elicits questions regarding what is permissible with material found on YouTube, and to what extent you can edit this into a thriller. Can a director use manipulation to tell their story? And why would you want to record everything and share it online if that entails no more private, unknown moments?
