The Sky Above Us
For several months in 1999, Belgrade was the target of NATO bombardment, intended to force Milosevic to withdraw his troops from Kosovo. Stage actress Ana, television technician Sloba and young Bojan each try to carry on with their lives in their own way under the ever-present threat of air strikes – sometimes to forget – and then must face the inevitable dilemmas this brings. They work, party, love and argue, always with death looming in the background.
In passing, their lives – which occasionally cross – illustrate the madness of an abstract war and show the severity of the consequences this has at a personal level. The capital of the former Yugoslavia is not only a backdrop to the individual, social and political drama that unfolds, but also a major character in this drama: the city is portrayed in atmospheric images that show both beauty and horrendous devastation.
