There is a huge gulf between the rich tourists in their expensive hotels on the coast of the Dominican Republic and the poor local population, who can only dream of such luxury. Nevertheless, it seems that the older lady Anne (veteran Geraldine Chaplin) and the young Dominican woman Noéli have managed to bridge this gulf: they have been in a close relationship for three years. But how equal is this partnership? How much is determined by love, and how much by economic motives? Noéli asks Anne for money a lot. Money she of course desperately needs. Will she really go to Paris with her? Sand Dollars is a delicate examination of a relationship full of conflicting desires, deception and unexpressed expectations – built, in spite of everything, on mutual respect. A self-assured, intimate drama presenting two strong women, and lovingly and painstakingly revealing their weaknesses.
