Romantic Heaven

Jang Jin says he based the script of Romantic Heaven on the Bible, but he might have been joking. Three randomly intersecting tales of everyday life tend to confirm the Sartrean proposition that hell is other people. A lawyer desperately misses his late wife. A young girl desperately looks for someone to donate a kidney to her dying mother, but the only candidate is on the run from the cops, suspected of murdering his girlfriend. A taxi driver learns that his grandfather only ever loved a girl he met and lost during the Korean War.
All of these people find a kind of salvation in their romantic fantasies of a benign God who watches over individual destinies from his perch in a charmingly imagined heaven. God is played by veteran character-actor Lee Soonjae, but the character says He’s a Buddhist.
