Few and far between are artists able to thoroughly eradicate all borders drawn by commerce and bourgeois taste between the different spheres of cinema. The incomparable Ivan Cardoso is one such: a perfect mix of outsider artist and avant-gardist, smut-peddler and cine-philosopher. For roughly the last 50 years, he made one anti-film after another, most short and on Super-8, each a feast lurid and delirious; Orgy of the Devil and Other Forbidden Tapes of Ivan Cardoso is a collection of these. On the surface, Cardoso’s films are absurdly romantic parody-pastiches of popular genre fare, mainly horror and porn, several featuring the one and only almost-president of Brazil, José Mojica Marins. Looked at more closely, they are tropical prose poems on the merry malaise of his fatherland, Surrealist skits made to piss off the few who hover in helicopters over the many who sense the smells and textures of their wretched existence.
