Based on Jang Jin’s own play The Big Scene, this is a bravura cinematic performance. Murder, Take One imagines a near future in which a murder trial is not only televised but heavily manipulated by the TV producers. The two prosecutors nonetheless have to investigate before going to court, and they’re stymied by the fact that the prime suspect (a young man caught trying to set fire to the hotel room in which the woman victim died) is increasingly obviously not the murderer. The mystery has an Agatha Christie-like complexity, and the truth ironically begins to emerge only after the TV guys bring in a shaman to channel the victim’s spirit. The all-star cast includes many Jang Jin regulars, and Jang himself brings a dazzling range of visual ideas to the party.
