Franck Neuhart is a shy police officer in Oise in northern France in the late 1970s, where a maniac is on the loose. Deliberate hit-and-runs on random young women quickly escalate into more violent acts. Neuhart’s role in the investigation of this case forms the perfect camouflage for the disturbing truth: the perpetrator everyone is looking for is him. This resembles a modern version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but director Cédric Anger based the screenplay of his police thriller on a real case from the area where he grew up. Instead of looking for psychological reasons, he concentrates on his main character’s downward spiral and creates a heavy atmosphere of oppression, particularly in scenes taking place in Neuhart’s dingy bachelor pad. His below the surface tension is created with spine-chilling precision by Guillaume Canet (L’homme qu’on aimait trop).
