The system or the individual? That's the question in our 'brave new world' that has arisen from the match between the New Media and the New Economy. Christoph Hochhäusler tells the story of Fabian, an investigative reporter in Germany's capital. Sometimes he evokes memories of an untouchable, incorruptible researcher, but all in all, Fabian is in no way a revenant of Robert Redford's character in Allan J. Pakula's All the President's Men - whose heroic aura Hochhäusler cites, as he does that film's inherent paranoia.
The life of this hard-boiled leading man tracking down a political scandal is crisscrossed with overheated images of Berlin's night life, illegal gambling halls, fencing matches and furious rides in Porsches through the urban jungle. Icy cool, too, are the actions of the Lobby Agency, which fabricates the political consensus with a no-nonsense, grey-suit attitude, but with dirty thoughts.
