The chambermaid Lynn is incredibly dedicated to her work. She even polishes unused hotel rooms spick and span. Lynn is also orderly in her private life. Her days follow a fixed pattern, with weekly visits to her psychiatrist as the social climax.
German director and scriptwriter Ingo Haeb based his film on a novel by Markus Orths. He did not replace the book's interior monologue with a voice-over; instead, the camera studies the actress Vicky Krieps. It slowly becomes clear that a world of emotions is hidden behind Lynn’s imperturbable exterior. The chambermaid sometimes hides under the bed in a hotel room and studies the habits of the guests. She becomes fascinated by Chiara, a call girl who specialises in SM.
Calmly and precisely, Orth increasingly reveals the colour in Lynn’s bare life. The meticulous form, the crystal clear camerawork and the subtle screenplay make The Chambermaid Lynn both a modest and impressive character study. It won the Fipresci Award in Montréal.
