With Gabriel Abrantes’s prodigious Rotterdam 2010 entry Visionary Iraq we asked whether things could get any more wrong? The good news is that they do. Playing the ludicrously self-confident protagonists of their film, Abrantes & Schmidt head for the jungle. It’s a work of great imagination, biting chunks from the rule-book, pitching cliché against cliché and with an opening that couples the sublime Iguazu Falls with the husky wisdom of Nina Simone.
